For the benefit of those people not fortunate enough to have met him: Bill Holgate was possibly the finest grainer & marbler in the world since Thomas Kershaw held the title 150 years ago, and the most kind-hearted, humble gentleman you could ever wish to meet. His achievements include the prestigious award known as the 'Freedom of the City and Guilds of London' and he was made 'A Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers of Trinity Lane, London' on March 14, 1995, of which he was very proud. He was also given the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' at the 2001 Paris Salon. Bill was my mentor; my inspiration, my occasional drinking partner, and above all my pal. I hear his voice everytime I pick up a brush... he will always be with me. Bill was a national treasure, and has now passed into legend. It is now up to those of us he touched, to carry the torch he lit. I just know that Bill and Kershaw are swapping notes and talking trade right now, and have probably already given St Peter a bid on redoing the gates of heaven. |
